What is Involved in Consular Processing?

If you are currently overseas and want to apply for immigrant status, then there are a few steps that you will need to take.

Filing the Petition: To apply for consular processing, your family member who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident will need to completea Petition for Alien Relative. If your immigration is employment-based, your employer will need to complete a PEtition for Alien worker.

Petition processing: Once you petition is approved, the United states Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will notify the petitioner. It is then sent to the National Visa Center (NVS).

Instruction Packet: You will receive an instruction packet once your visa is available. This packet includes instructions for completing documents and sending additional information or fees.

Appointment Letter: Once your documents are complete, you will receive notice of a scheduled interview. You will be provided with a date, time, and place for the interview, as well as any information or documents still needed.

Medical Examination: All applicants for immigration visas are required to have a medical examination. The exam must be completed by a designated physician. You may be asked to provide vaccination and other records.

Consular Interview: During your interview, your application will be reviewed by an official from the U.S. Consulate. The interview will confirm information and provide any details about medical or other issues that may hinder you admissiblity.
